During yesterday's meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners recognized six students with the 15th annual Youth Excellence and Achievement (YEA!) Awards for their accomplishments in academics, community service, and the performing arts. The honorees, representing both middle and high schools, were acknowledged in the categories of leadership, volunteer work, and overcoming adversity.
According to the Hillsborough County release, the Board also discussed progress on the planned Indoor Sports Facility at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) site. A report indicated that using County-owned land could save approximately $15 million, reducing the project’s total estimated cost to $70.5 million. Most of the funding will come from the County’s Community Investment Tax renewal. An interlocal agreement with the Tampa Sports Authority was approved for design services, with the facility expected to open in 2028.
In addition, the Board approved a Purchase Agreement of up to $17.95 million for upgrades to George M. Steinbrenner Field. The improvements, funded through the County’s Tourist Development Tax, will include security enhancements, digital upgrades, parking improvements, seating and field renovations, and better lighting.
The Board also directed the County Administrator to form a team to review current Board policies and recommend possible updates.
Commissioners approved funding for upcoming cultural events, including $93,750 for the 2026 Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival & Music Fest and $60,000 for the 2026 United Bikerz Jamboree.
