The second annual Wig Fashion Show at the Ruskin Senior Center served as a fundraiser and educational event for breast cancer awareness. Local seniors modeled wigs that will be donated to women undergoing cancer treatment through the organization Luna, according to Hillsborough County.

Speakers from Moffitt Cancer Center provided information on the importance of regular cancer screenings. Attendees received guidance on lifestyle factors, such as tobacco use, that can increase cancer risk, and participated in discussions on genetics that included personal experiences.

The presentations were accompanied by models from the center preparing for their walk on the catwalk. The wigs on display ranged from straight to curly styles and from blonde to brunette shades. Venitha Coleman, who has been cancer-free for 12 years, emphasized the importance of regular checkups.

Hillsborough County reported that during the catwalk intermissions, audience members participated in raffle drawings and viewed performances by the senior center’s dance group. At the end of the show, center members who had experienced and overcome breast cancer wore “survivor” sashes on stage.
