Honolulu drivers on the H-1 Freeway should prepare for extended weekend closures, as the Hawaii Department of Transportation delayed the Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project from October 2025 to February 2026. Noise restrictions now prevent weeknight repaving, so work will occur continuously from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, closing the three right eastbound lanes between the Kaimakani Street overpass and Pearl Harbor/Nimitz off-ramp, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The remaining work includes repaving, eastbound reconstruction, guardrail and sign installation, rumble strips, and final striping in both directions. Motorists are advised to plan ahead for these disruptions through the new February 2026 timeline, as reported by the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Ongoing construction may be affected by weather, so completion dates could change. Drivers are urged "to drive with caution, be aware of all traffic control signs and barriers and plan commutes ahead of time," as mentioned by the Hawaii Department of Transportation. Special duty police officers will be on site to help with safety.
