Following a concerning phone call yesterday morning, Hoover High School underwent a "soft lockdown," an action mirrored by other schools across the city in response to what appeared to be a broader threat. The chain of lockdowns was part of a coordinated effort to ensure student safety, prompted by a potential threat reported to the School Resource Officer and school authorities. According to a statement released by the North Canton Police Department, via the City of North Canton, Ohio official website, the school was put into this precautionary state while the nature of the call was investigated.
Chief of Police Frank Kemp Jr. said through the City of North Canton, Ohio official website, "We want to share an update about the situation at Hoover High School that we reported earlier today." The updated press release noted that while the lockdown was lifted towards day's end, extra police officers remained stationed at schools across the city to "help with a safe and normal dismissal." The NCPD added that investigators are working with the FBI to trace the origin of the call, which may be linked to similar threats directed at other school districts and Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital.
The NCPD emphasized the importance of community and family involvement in matters of school security. "We’re thankful for the quick actions of school staff and the support from everyone in the community," Kemp stated in the press release, according to the City of North Canton, Ohio website. The swift response of the school's staff and the actions taken by the SRO were critical in addressing the threat, showcasing a system working to protect its students in moments where fear and uncertainty could easily take hold.
Additionally, transparency played a crucial role in managing the incident, with the original NCPD media release underscoring their commitment to an open dialogue with the public. We understand the importance of transparency, stated Kemp, and encouraged community members to contact the police department directly or use the appropriate anonymous reporting channels should they have any relevant information. In light of these incidents, the NCPD continues to affirm its dedication to maintaining secure school environments and expresses gratitude for the community's ongoing trust and support.
