A Houston police officer was hospitalized early Saturday morning after a collision involving a suspected drunk driver. The officer, who was performing traffic control duties at the time, sustained injuries when a pickup truck slammed into his patrol vehicle on the North Freeway.
The crash occurred approximately at 1:28 a.m. on the northbound entrance ramp to the 10100 block of the North Freeway Service Road, in the vicinity of West Road. The HPD officer was responding to a prior accident on the freeway when the pickup struck his vehicle. The collision resulted in significant damage to the patrol unit and injuries to the officer, according to Click2Houston.
"While blocking traffic, a truck plowed into the officers' vehicles, causing severe damage and injuries to the officer," Sergeant Mike Barrow told ABC13. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was later reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the pickup was detained at the scene and is suspected of driving while intoxicated. Investigations are ongoing, but initial findings suggest that alcohol was likely a contributing factor in this incident. In light of the event, authorities have issued a reminder urging drivers to remain vigilant and avoid engaging in impaired driving, especially near crash scenes or where emergency vehicles are present on the road.
