As Howard University’s Homecoming Weekend gears up to bring together alumni and students for a celebration steeped in tradition and school spirit, residents and visitors to the area should brace for significant traffic changes. The Metropolitan Police Department has issued a traffic advisory outlining the closures and parking restrictions that will take effect starting tomorrow, October 24, and continue through late Saturday, October 25.
The heart of the Homecoming festivities, Yardfest, will see several streets around the university converted into pedestrian zones. According to the MPDC's advisory, streets such as 6th Street from Girard Street to W Street, NW, and Fairmont Street from Georgia to 6th Street, NW, among others, will be closed from Friday at 6:00 a.m. to Saturday at 11:59 p.m. Those planning to drive through these areas should reroute accordingly.
For those who are intent on catching the Homecoming Football Game, a different set of street closures and no parking zones will be implemented on Saturday. "Georgia Avenue from Columbia Road to Florida Avenue, NW" and "Barry Place from Sherman Avenue to Georgia Avenue, NW" are among the key areas affected according to the advisory. These changes are set to help manage the expected influx of crowds safely.
Moreover, the MPDC has shared that certain streets may experience intermittent closures on Saturday to assist with crowd management. The advisory notes that streets such as "V Street from 9th Street to Georgia Avenue, NW" and "Euclid Street from Sherman Avenue to Georgia Avenue, NW" could see temporary shutdowns to facilitate the smooth operation of the weekend's events. Necessary access for local traffic and residents will be maintained throughout this time.
Furthermore, for those attending Off The Yard Tailgate and Souled Out Dates at Nationals Park, expect "Emergency No Parking" signs to be posted alongside "Half Street and M Street to N Street, SE," effectively from Saturday 10:00 a.m. until the end of the events. Spectators and participants are encouraged to use alternative transportation methods, including public transit, to reduce congestion and enhance everyone's overall experience during the iconic homecoming weekend.
