A fatal accident took place on I-295 in Duval County, claiming the life of a Jacksonville man yesterday. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the incident occurred near Mile Marker 61B at approximately 2:49 p.m, as reported by First Coast News. The man, aged 48, was behind the wheel of a sedan in the left middle lane of the highway when the accident transpired.
According to Action News Jax, the man lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to pass a pickup truck, resulting in his right rear colliding with the front left of the truck. After striking the pickup-truck, the sedan was redirected and subsequently encountered the right shoulder's guardrail before it was sent towards a ditch. Not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, the man succumbed to his injuries.
The pickup truck was operated by a 40-year-old man from Jacksonville, who had a passenger on board; both remained unharmed in the incident. In a statement obtained by News4Jax, the pickup truck driver recounted seeing the sedan in his rearview mirror before the fateful moment when the sedan's driver passed him and lost control.
Following the accident, the driver of the pickup truck managed to pull over to the right shoulder safely. The FHP has not released further details about the potential causes that led to the driver of the sedan losing control. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and authorities have yet to announce if any charges will be pursued in the aftermath of the tragedy.
