Cobb County has ushered in a new era of law enforcement leadership, as the County's Board of Commissioners gave a unanimous nod to James D. Ferrell as the next Chief of Police. Ferrell, who carries a hefty 32 years of service under his belt, has been a part of the Cobb County Police Department for 29 of those years, ascending the ranks to now hold the department's most senior position. His tenure as Interim Police Chief, which started back in April, seemingly set the stage for this official promotion.
Addressing an assembly gathered within the confines of the boardroom—a space where decisions ripple outward to touch the daily lives of the county's residents—Chief Ferrell reflected on his journey: "When I started in this department 29 years ago, I never thought I’d be standing here today," he shared, as reported by Cobb County's official news release. A testament to their diligent search, Ferrell expressed appreciation towards the Board of Commissioners for their careful selection process.
Mike Register, Cobb Public Safety Director and former academy instructor to Ferrell, also spoke in glowing terms about the latter's ascent to Chief of Police. Having witnessed his career unfold firsthand, Register declared, "They couldn’t have made a better choice. I look forward to all he will do," as quoted from the Cobb County news release. The high praise underlines a career that has evidently been marked by consistent growth and commitment.
Standing at the helm of a 700-strong force, Chief Ferrell has laid out his blueprint for the department's future during a press conference. "I truly believe connection with the community is the key to success if you want a safer county," said Chief Ferrell, stating his dedication to fostering open and transparent communication. Sourced from Cobb County's announcement, it's clear that establishing a rapport with residents stands paramount on his agenda. Moreover, Ferrell plans to arm his team with the necessary support, emphasizing the importance of mental and physical wellness, alongside professional development opportunities, keeping pace with the rapidly changing landscape offered by modern technology.
Ferrell has wasted no time in assuming his duties, with his appointment taking immediate effect.
