The Lawton City Council has officially named Jari Askins as the Interim City Attorney, bringing a seasoned veteran of Oklahoma politics into the role. In her new capacity, Askins is tasked with guiding the City's Legal Department and advising both the City Council and administration on legal matters.
Askins has an extensive background in public service, holding positions across the state's judicial, legislative, and executive branches — experience deemed invaluable by the Council. This appointment follows her stint as the interim president at Cameron University, just one part of a career spanning over four decades. Her extensive resume highlights a life committed to the state of Oklahoma, focused on areas including state government leadership, child welfare reform, and higher education, among others.
In a statement released by the City of Lawton, Mayor Stan Booker expressed the city's outlook on the appointment, noting, "Jari Askins brings a wealth of experience, professionalism, and wisdom to the City of Lawton. Her leadership will strengthen our legal operations and support our continued efforts to serve the citizens of Lawton with transparency and integrity. We are very proud to welcome her to our team."
Tim Wilson, who has been filling the position, will revert back to his role as Deputy City Attorney. Recognizing Wilson's contributions during his tenure as Acting City Attorney, Mayor Booker lauded his professionalism and dedication. "I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to Tim Wilson, who has served as Acting City Attorney with professionalism, grace, and dedication," Booker stated. "He is a true team player, always focused on what’s best for the City and the citizens we serve," as mentioned on the City of Lawton release.
Compliments were also extended to the entire legal staff in Lawton, who according to Mayor Booker, collectively uphold the standards of municipal law and teamwork necessary during such transitions. With Askins at the helm, the City continues its quest for a permanent City Attorney, who will take over following this interim period.
