The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) has officially kicked off its annual Shop with a Cop program, an event that embodies the spirit of giving by pairing law enforcement officers with children from the local community for a day of holiday shopping. Now in its eleventh year, the initiative is set to bring joy to families on December 10, with applications now being open from October 13 through November 12. According to the City of Johnson's announcement, interested parties can download applications from the City’s website or obtain them in person at the Records Office.
Participants are selected through a careful application process, and once chosen, they get the opportunity not only to shop with a cop but also to receive essential winter clothing and gifts for each child in their household. Families are further supported with a holiday food box, extending the reach of this program beyond the immediate thrill of holiday shopping. Last year, the JCPD was able to serve 74 families, translating into a festive season for 85 children, all made possible by the support of local businesses and generous residents. To become part of this mission, individuals can access shopping lists online and contribute directly to the cause.
Moving beyond just cash donations, the community can also contribute through everyday shopping at no additional cost. The JCPD has partnered with Kroger Community Rewards, whereby a portion of grocery sales from those with a linked Kroger Savings Card will automatically benefit Shop with a Cop. Interested supporters can link their savings cards to the program by selecting 'Community Rewards' in their Kroger account settings and designating the JCPD’s Shop with a Cop as the recipient, either by name or by the number PH158.
The lasting impact of the Shop with a Cop event can be felt across the community, as it strengthens connections between law enforcement and the public they serve. It stands as a reminder of the potential for unity and goodwill amidst the chaotic currents of the holiday season shopping. Last year's success has set a high bar, and with the community's continued generosity, this year's event promises to not only match but exceed the joy and support extended to families in need.
