Clear out your garages and under-sink cabinets, because it's time to safely dispose of those hazardous materials you've been meaning to get rid of. County of Kaua'i residents are being reminded by the Public Works Solid Waste Division about the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) events on the horizon. Set aside October 18 and 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for some autumn cleaning that's both green and safe.
The Saturday schedule includes Hanapēpē Base yard at 4380 Lele Road and Kapa‘a Base yard located at 4900 Kahau Road. On Sunday, the collection moves to Anaina Hou Community Park, right behind Kauai Mini Golf at 5-2723 Kūhiō Highway, and the Kaua‘i Resource Center at 3460 Ahukini Road. These locations offer a convenient drop-off point for items like automotive products, old batteries, oil-based paints, and many other hazardous materials that shouldn't be tossed in your regular trash bin. However, residents should note that eWaste, propane tanks, medical waste, and flares, among others, are not accepted, as detailed by the County of Kaua'i.
If you're not sure whether you can bring items like an old car battery or a half-used can of stain, the County of Kaua‘i Household Hazardous Waste website has a full list of what's accepted. The event is for residents only—businesses, non-profits, farms, and government agencies need other options. If you have questions, call the Solid Waste Office at 808-241-4841 for help safely disposing of hazardous household items.
