Chaos erupted in a Kīlauea neighborhood after a man recklessly set off an illegal firework, prompting a swift police response. According to a county press release, the incident occurred on Thursday, when residents were startled by an explosion under a parked car, resulting from a mishandled aerial firework.
Police arrested 24-year-old Bronze Robson in connection with the blast, which happened at around 11:30 a.m. After witnesses reported seeing a man flee the scene, authorities identified Robson through surveillance footage that captured the moment the firework was ignited and subsequently exploded. Despite the potential danger, no injuries were reported. Robson faces charges of Reckless Endangering in the Second Degree, and remains in KPD Cellblock with bail set at $1,000, the county's statement detailed.
In light of the danger posed by illegal fireworks, Assistant Chief Darren Rose issued a warning that underscores the risks such activities present.
