Knoxville City Council has approved two major projects aimed at advancing development along the South Waterfront. During a recent meeting, officials gave the go-ahead for a key greenway connection and improvements to a parking lot serving Sevier Avenue businesses. According to the city’s official website, the projects are expected to strengthen both the area’s infrastructure and community accessibility.

Knoxville is moving forward with a major boost for pedestrians and cyclists along the South Waterfront. City Council has authorized Mayor Indya Kincannon to transfer $2 million to the Knoxville Community Development Corporation for the construction of a long-awaited greenway connection. The project will close a gap between 303 Flats and the CityView condominiums, creating what officials call a “missing link” in the city’s greenway system. Plans include a route that will cross the elevated Norfolk Southern rail line and navigate the steep terrain near Henley Bridge with a switchback along the riverfront, designed to ensure the path is bike-friendly, walkable, and ADA accessible.

Shifting focus to parking, the City Council approved an amendment to upgrade a 79-space lot on Island Home Avenue, located beneath the James White Parkway. The project will revitalize the underused site with improved lighting and other enhancements, making it a more functional option for visitors. Just a third of a mile from Sevier Avenue’s business district, the lot will also include a new crosswalk linking to a continuous sidewalk on the north side of Island Home Avenue, improving safety and access for pedestrians heading into the area.

As reported by the city's official website, both the greenway and parking lot projects are being handled with careful consideration of the practical needs of Knoxville’s daily commuters and passers-by.
