Following a utility-related incident last Tuesday, Kūhiō Highway experienced traffic disruptions in the Wailua area. According to a County of Kauai press release, the highway was initially closed between North and South Leho Drive, leading to detours. Eastbound traffic was redirected onto Leho Drive, while southbound motorists were routed either onto an old cane haul access road or Leho Drive.
Later in the day, southbound lanes reopened as crews continued repairs at the site. Authorities advised that large, heavy, or low-clearance vehicles should avoid the old cane haul access road. Motorists were urged to drive cautiously, follow detour signs, and remain alert for utility crews and emergency personnel.
The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative is working to replace a damaged utility pole, with repair completion expected within approximately eight hours. Officials requested public cooperation during this period.
As of 2:20 p.m., the highway has reopened in both directions, and normal traffic flow has resumed. Authorities will issue additional updates if necessary.
