As Las Vegas gears up for the thrill of Formula One, the city is also buckling down for a slew of road closures. The upcoming Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix has necessitated the full closure of the intersection at Koval Lane and Flamingo Road, which began last night and will continue through Friday, a move that is stirring mixed reactions from locals and businesses. According to 8NewsNow, detours are in place but extra travel time should be accounted for. Sameer Singh, an employee at Las Vegas Souvenir and Gifts, expressed his frustration, "We looked at the F1. It was cool the first time, but over the years, it just hurt our business," Singh told 8NewsNow. Sidewalks will also be partially closed, impacting foot traffic.
Travel disruptions are not limited to the intersection of Koval and Flamingo. Lane reductions on Harmon Avenue began tonight and will affect traffic through the end of the week. A local resident, El Cosby, shared his experience with 8NewsNow, “Typical travel times through this area on a normal day, maybe about 30 minutes. During F1, probably changes to about 40 to 45 minutes a day.” Despite his commute being affected, Cosby acknowledged the positive impact on the city's economy.
The construction efforts for the race are widespread, with an additional 24-hour lane reduction on Las Vegas Boulevard until November 10 due to MGM Resorts’ construction of the Bellagio Fountain Club. This information, as noted by KTNV, outlines that pedestrian access will be blocked in front of the Bellagio until the construction is complete. Moreover, Sands Avenue will see overnight lane reductions through Friday, October 17, with continuous single-lane reductions near the Palazzo garage.
With the race scheduled from November 20 through November 22, these adjustments in the cityscape are a prelude to the international event expected to draw significant crowds and revenue.
