The Las Vegas community is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic school bus collision that claimed the life of 12-year-old Haylee Ryan. According to a FOX5 report, the accident occurred last Monday, Oct. 6 near Bradley Road and West Tropical Parkway. Haylee was on her bicycle when the collision with the school bus happened, which also involved a Chevy Tahoe parked in a bike lane. The bus driver, now found to be at fault for not yielding adequate space to the bicyclist, continued driving after the initial contact, resulting in the rear tires hitting the girl.
Investigators reported that upon the collision, the bus traveled an additional 121 feet, dragging Haylee 8 feet before coming to a stop. Tragically, after being transported to UMC with serious injuries, Haylee succumbed to her injuries the following day, as stated in a News3LV article. Despite the findings, no immediate enforcement actions have been taken against the bus driver amid ongoing investigations.
Ryan’s passing has reignited concerns over traffic safety in areas around schools which have seen several such tragic incidents in recent weeks. Bethany Limov, a parent advocate with Walking Safely LV, expressed that it's "heartbreaking" and "terrifying" for parents, highlighting the urgent need for reforms. These sentiments were echoed by Meghan Ryan, Haylee's mother, who called for changes to ensure children's safety while commuting to school. Meghan, who told Hoodline, reminisced about her daughter saying, "I just know Haylee is with God right now, and that's the only thing that's keeping me going these last few months and she was an amazing girl. She’s gonna be missed and I know the school is impacted by her and all of her friends and family love her."
The local community paid their respects to Haylee at a candlelight vigil held at Lied STEM Academy, where she was commemorated by friends and family. Haylee was remembered as "funny, kind, and creative," often making art and designing her own clothes. A funeral service has been arranged for the upcoming Saturday at Canyon Ridge Christian Church, as mentioned in a News3LV report. The investigation continues.
