Residents and visitors to the Leeward Coast should brace for upcoming disruptions as five parking lots at Nānākuli and Mā‘ili are set for a makeover this fall. According to the Department of Parks and Recreation, starting October 27 through November 14, both Kalaniana‘ole Beach Park and Ulehawa Beach Park will undergo a series of repaving projects, which will result in the closure of the lots and adjacent campgrounds.

The phased repaving will kick off at Kalaniana‘ole Beach Park according to the following schedule: Areas B & C from October 27 to October 31, Area A from November 3 to November 7, and Depot Beach from November 3 to November 7. Following on, Ulehawa Beach Park's Area #2, located at 87-716 Farrington Highway, is set to be repaved from November 10 to November 14. The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation warns that this schedule may shift due to unforeseen circumstances or weather delays, according to an announcement.

In preparation for the repaving, permitted camping at Kalaniana‘ole Beach Park will be suspended a few days prior, starting from Friday, October 24, through Thursday, November 6. The presence of heavy machinery and the ongoing work will obstruct access to the campsites, which is expected to significantly detract from the serene camping experience usually offered. Campers can look forward to resuming their outdoor activities on the afternoon of Friday, November 7, as noted in the official announcement.

Seal Pros has been awarded the contract for the first three areas in Kalaniana‘ole Beach Park, coming in at nearly $320,000; while Alakona Corp has secured the contract for the other two lots with a bid of $142,500. The Department of Parks and Recreation extends its gratitude for the community's patience and understanding while these necessary improvements are made to the parking lots and campsites.
