Yesterday, Parkville High School in Baltimore County briefly escalated into a scene of urgency as it was placed on lockdown after suspicions arose of a student carrying a weapon on campus. Reporting on the incident, WMAR-2 News stated that the situation began when school officials, investigating the smell of marijuana, discovered that a student had a gun. The unfolding of events led to the activation of lockdown protocols at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Authorities, including school resource officers, swiftly responded to the threat as the lockdown prohibited anyone from entering or exiting the building without express permission from the principal. The student in question fled the premises but was quickly taken into custody. An unloaded firearm was eventually found, and officers conducted a secondary search, which resulted in the discovery of a discarded magazine, as detailed in the account by WMAR-2 News.
The lockdown was lifted just 15 minutes later, with the principal, Maureen Astarita, assuring in a letter to parents and guardians recovered by WBAL that "normal instruction resumed" following the incident. The unnamed 16-year-old student now faces adult charges due to the severity of the situation. In a communication disseminated to the school community, Astarita said, "Dangerous and disruptive behaviors will not be tolerated at Parkville High School." She insisted on the gravity of the consequences, ranging from a possible one-year expulsion to legal action in line with state law, as elucidated by WMAR-2 News.
