In a recent announcement, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated that Dennis Carrol, a 34-year-old man from Evergreen Road in Flanders, Long Island, has been sentenced to an 18-year prison term. This sentencing follows a jury's March conviction of Carrol for the criminal possession of a controlled substance, involving approximately two kilograms of fentanyl. The drugs, with a street value estimated at $80,000, were discovered in Carrol's vehicle during a November 2022 stop by federal agents in Hollis.
The DA emphasized, "Those who peddle poison into Queens are on notice: my office will prosecute drug traffickers and work with our law enforcement partners to seize lethal drugs to ensure public safety." Katz thanked the Drug Enforcement Administration for their role in this significant arrest, according to a statement by the Queens District Attorney's Office website.
According to a DEA assessment, a single kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill half a million people, making the 2 kilograms found in Carrol's possession a particularly significant discovery. Fentanyl is known for its potency, and just 2 milligrams can constitute a lethal dose.
Justice Leigh Cheng sentenced Carrol after a four-week trial, also imposing five years of post-release supervision. The Major Narcotics Unit of the District Attorney’s Major Economic Crimes Bureau spearheaded the operation that led to Carrol's arrest, in conjunction with the DEA’s New York Division. Assistant District Attorney Kieran Linehan prosecuted the case with supervision from various senior members of the District Attorney's Office.
