Early on a Sunday morning, a substantial fire engulfed a Sawtelle storage facility, necessitating a significant response from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). As reported by KTLA, the blaze, which sparked around 6:27 a.m. in the 11400 block of West Exposition Boulevard, drew heavy smoke from a two-story row of storage units. There were approximately 76 firefighters dispatched to tackle the fire, managing to declare the situation under control within an hour and a half.
According to the same KTLA report, the fire spread to multiple units across both levels. Firefighters aggressively worked to prevent further advancement of the flames, which prompted the call for additional resources. Crews were forced to cut access holes in the building’s second-floor section to isolate the fire within the compromised structure, marking a tactical approach against the challenging situation. Despite the intensity of the flames, no injuries were reported, and firefighters planned to stay on-site throughout the morning to monitor for any remaining hotspots.
The LAFD had initially released details of the incident in real-time through their alerts system. As found on the LAFD's website, the first alert described a 30' x 300' two-story storage facility, with fire in multiple units and heavy smoke emanating from the roof vents. The report mentioned firefighters were in offensive mode, anticipating the arrival of additional resources to help protect adjacent units from the fire.
Later, a knockdown announcement from the LAFD provided further detail on the sequence of events that led to extinguishing the fire. After a "90 minute battle", the forces located and isolated the fire, which had crushed through multiple storage units. A significant part of the firefighting effort involved creating entry points to access the flames directly. The LAFD's announcement emphasized that there were, fortunately, no injuries, and it recommended that drivers steer clear of the area throughout the morning to ensure the crews could work uninterrupted.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and as the situation unfolded, traffic in the vicinity was disrupted. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area around West Exposition Boulevard while the LAFD and other emergency personnel worked at the scene to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and posed no further threat to public safety or property.
