A confrontation in Waiʻanae escalated when a man was arrested after reportedly assaulting a Honolulu police officer. The Honolulu Police Department issued a statement on its official Facebook page detailing the incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon. Officers were called to Ala Hema Street due to a report of a male with a handgun in a dispute with a family member.
Upon arriving at the scene, the 20-year-old male suspect quickly became hostile and attempted to grab hold of an officer's firearm. What ensued was a short, intense struggle before the suspect was subdued and taken into custody. The officer involved, while struggling with the suspect, sustained minor injuries. It was later established that the so-called handgun was, in fact, an airsoft pistol, according to the Honolulu Police Department's social media post.
The Department of the Prosecuting Attorney will be working to determine the appropriate charges against the suspect.
