An 18-year-old skateboarder was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in suburban Chicago, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old man. According to NBC Chicago, the incident occurred around 6:44 p.m. on October 18, on the 14900 block of Harmony Road, near Briar Hill Road in McHenry County. The victim, from Marengo, was skateboarding westbound near the white edge line of the eastbound lane when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV, which then proceeded to flee the scene.
The young man was airlifted to Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside in Rockford, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. A later update by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office indicated that the vehicle involved was identified as a 2019 Toyota Highlander. This key piece of information led to the arrest of Issac D. Keating, also from Marengo, in connection with the crash. Keating is currently facing felony charges, including failure to report an accident involving personal injury and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury, as well as a misdemeanor charge for failure to provide aid.
Details provided by Fox32 Chicago further note that the charges against Keating are severe, with failure to report an accident involving personal injury classified as a Class 2 felony, and the charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury being a Class 4 felony. Additionally, Keating is charged with failure to provide aid, which is considered a Class A misdemeanor.
As the investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is still ongoing, more details may emerge in the coming days. The event has resonated throughout the local community, raising questions about pedestrian safety and accountability on the road. For now, many hope for a swift and fair resolution to a situation that has altered the lives of an 18-year-old skateboarder and the accused 35-year-old man.
