Last Friday afternoon, 33-year-old Changlin Li allegedly stole a Medstar ambulance from the scene of a rollover crash at Novi and 10 Mile roads in Oakland County while an injured driver was being treated inside. He then led police on a chase before crashing at Eight Mile and Beck roads, injuring a 72-year-old man, according to CBS News Detroit.
Li attempted to flee on foot and reportedly tried to disarm an officer before being taken into custody, resulting in multiple felony charges. “We are grateful for the safety of our crew, the response of our partner agencies, and the bystanders who helped,” Medstar CEO Kolby Miller said, as reported by WXYZ.
Li has been charged with carjacking, fleeing and eluding, resisting a police officer, and additional counts. He is being held on a $5 million bond while awaiting a probable cause conference set for November 5, as mentioned by Audacy. The ambulance involved in the crash caught fire and was declared a total loss. The medic, the patient, and the person in the second crash had injuries that were not life-threatening.
