An officer-involved shooting in Alexandria has left a man dead and prompted an investigation led by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The incident occurred last Saturday evening when DeKalb County deputies served a court-ordered warrant to 48-year-old Gary Ray Ashford. According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, as deputies approached, Ashford allegedly revealed a weapon and came toward them. In the confrontation that ensued, Ashford was fatally shot by the officers and pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shooting and subsequent death of Ashford on Goodner Lane, both the District Attorney’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were notified of the incident. This event instigated official procedures, with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation taking the lead, as mentioned by FOX17. Further reporting by WSMV detailed that Sheriff Patrick Ray thanked the Smithville Police Department, which sent officers as backup during a fatal exchange.
Details are scarce in the wake of the shooting, but the deputies, who have not been named, were executing a process that was, as by law ordained, their duty. As reported by WKRN, Ashford's decision to brandish a weapon precipitated the deputies' lethal response. Authorized to serve and protect, the officers often struggle between upholding the law and life's sacred fragility.
