An intense confrontation between a man and state troopers in Indiana County escalated tragically, resulting in the man's death by gunfire. The man, identified as 34-year-old Jonathan James Pearce Jr., ignited a fire within his domicile before firing upon troopers from the rooftop with a shotgun, WTAE reported. This confrontation began around 5 p.m. last Sunday, after an initial assault report drew state troopers to Pearce's location on the 3000 block of Dixonville Road.
According to WTAE, "He eventually climbed up onto the roof of the residence, and was armed with a shotgun and fired upon our troopers that were there on the ground," explained Trooper Cliff Greenfield. The situation devolved as troopers returned fire, resulting in Pearce's fatality. Local firefighters were dispatched to the site, where they effectively extinguished the blaze set by Pearce. No other injuries were reported amidst the chaos.
An investigation into this fatal incident is currently underway by the Indiana County District Attorney’s Office in conjunction with the state police Troop A Major Case Team. The troopers involved have subsequently been assigned to administrative duty, in accordance with standard state police policy, as reported by WPXI.
