Manhattan has seen a recent series of violent incidents that have been addressed by the justice system with the resolution of an assault case. Marvin White, 40, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for an unprovoked attack on a 77-year-old woman and two officers who attempted to apprehend him in September of last year, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. D.A. Alvin L. Bragg Jr. stated that White’s plea includes an expected sentence of seven years in state prison and resolves all charges against him.

The indictment describes the incident occurring in the mid-afternoon when the elderly woman was on her way to Urgent Care in Kips Bay. White allegedly assaulted her with a plate for reasons not disclosed. After the attack, the victim reported the incident to the first NYPD officers she encountered. “We take attacks on older adults and police officers very seriously,” D.A. Bragg stated, emphasizing the department's commitment to public safety and justice in the wake of such incidences.

Officers Saul Rivera and Maria Corbisiero intervened and encountered White’s aggressive behavior. White, holding a plate in one hand and high heels in the other, did not comply with the officers’ commands. During their attempt to restrain him, White struck Officer Rivera with the plate, causing multiple lacerations and an injury that required an estimated 75 to 100 stitches. Officer Corbisiero also sustained an arm injury during the incident.

Assistant D.A. Samantha Levitz is leading the prosecution, supported by a team that includes Assistant D.A.s Annie Siegel and Harrison Schweiloch. The Manhattan D.A.’s office also acknowledged the NYPD, specifically Officers Haroon Hussain, Saul Rivera, and Maria Corbisiero of the 13th Precinct, for their involvement in the arrest and ongoing case proceedings. White’s sentencing is scheduled for November 13.
