The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has reported the guilt plea of Jerona Smith, a home health aide who conned her elderly clients out of $24,000, with further attempts to pilfer an additional $54,000. Manhattan D.A. Alvin L. Bragg Jr. described Smith's actions as a gross violation of trust against older individuals dependent on her care. According to a statement from the Manhattan D.A.'s Office, Smith is slated for a sentencing on January 20, 2026, which could land her 1-3 years behind bars.
Insidious in her means, Smith exploited her access to the personal and financial information of her clients, who were 70 and 69, and both in need of daily help due to their advanced age and health conditions. As admitted in her guilty plea, Smith's theft spree lasted about a month during mid-2023, encompassing unauthorized use of a victim's bank accounts, credit cards, and even the creation of new financial accounts in the victim's names. There's a clarion call made by D.A. Bragg to other older New Yorkers who might fear that they too have fallen victim to such betrayals—prompting them to reach out to Manhattan's Elder Abuse Unit.
The details are as disheartening as they are egregious. The 70-year-old victim, suffering from advanced dementia, was especially vulnerable to Smith's machinations. Court records reveal that Smith was fully aware of her client's incapacity while siphoning nearly $19,000 from her accounts. The second victim was just as ill-fated, with Smith's fingers allegedly writing checks to herself, and setting up a PayPal account all without consent. "Jerona Smith used her access as a home health aide to steal from older adults who relied on her for care," D.A. Bragg stated, as per the Manhattan D.A.'s Office.
The prosecution has brought in a multi-disciplinary team spanning members from the Cyber Crime Bureau to seasoned investigators specialized in elder abuse. Assistant D.A. Raphaelle Monty leads the charge, under the guidance of higher-ups within the Elder Abuse Unit and the Special Victims Division. The complexities of this case seem to unfold with each layer of expertise called upon, showcasing a criminal justice system striving to equal the cunning of those it hunts. Acknowledgment was also extended to the San Diego District Attorney's Office, validating the reach of this investigation across state lines.
