The Mankato Department of Public Safety has shared an update on the city's September traffic enforcement efforts, highlighting its ongoing initiative to enhance road safety. According to the post on their Facebook page, Mankato Police and Fire reported a total of 399 traffic stops in the month of September, leading to 181 citations issued.
In line with the report, the department caught 16 individuals driving under the influence (DWIs), with the highest blood alcohol concentration (BAC) recorded at an alarming 0.16. As part of the traffic stops, officers handed out 26 speeding citations, catching drivers at speeds such as 83 mph in a 35 mph zone—a stark reminder of the risks posed by excessive speeds on the city streets. Speeding remains a focal point of the department's continual monitoring.
However, speeding wasn't the sole safety infraction on Mankato's roads. Seatbelt citations were given to 19 people, emphasizing the importance of basic safety measures often overlooked. Mankato Police and Fire's post encapsulated this sentiment, stating, "Excessive speed, impaired driving, and not wearing a seatbelt are risks we can all help prevent."
As the Mankato Police and Fire Department reinforces these concerns, it also urged the community to contribute to safer roadways, providing clear guidelines: "Do your part every time you drive: Buckle up, slow down, drive sober, stay alert." Reflecting on the statistics, a sobering reality surfaces that despite repeated warnings and the known dangers, violations such as driving at 95 mph in a 65 mph zone and 56 mph in a 30 mph area are still being committed by motorists. This demonstrates a persistent disregard for the law, with officers actively working to mitigate such perilous behaviors on the road.
