In a somber reflection of domestic violence among the youth, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has disclosed the sentencing of 16-year-old Troy Aguilar-Olmos for assaulting his teenage girlfriend, handing down a prison sentence of 3.5 years. "What happened to this young woman is heartbreaking. No relationship should ever be marked by fear or violence, no matter the age of the offender," Mitchell stated, emphasizing the tragedy of the event and the steps taken toward justice.
The distressing incident took place in March, when Aguilar-Olmos, then 15, coerced his girlfriend with threats of lethal force. Upon her reluctant approach, she was met with violence; the defendant strangled her, prodded her back with a gun, and delivered multiple punches. Aguilar-Olmos was subsequently apprehended at his parents' residence, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's official release.
In legal proceedings, Aguilar-Olmos conceded to his actions, pleading guilty to one count of Aggravated Assault, a Class Three Felony, anda Domestic Violence offense, and another count of Aggravated Assault, a class four felony, and a Domestic Violence offense. This plea marked an end to a chapter of fear his victim had to endure, while silently opening another on the proceedings of youth within the criminal justice system.
