Matthew Bixler, a seasoned professional in fire service, takes the helm as Mecklenburg County's new Fire Marshal, assuming the position on October 6. With a background in fire service that spans over two decades, Bixler is poised to bring his depth of experience to the forefront, according to an announcement on Mecklenburg County’s news website. Before this, he served as Deputy Fire Marshal and has chalked up years of service in law enforcement and emergency services.
The new role is not just a position for Bixler but a continuation of a family legacy steeped in public service. His lineage has been deeply entrenched in various branches of emergency response—from his father's contributions in law enforcement to his uncles in the fire service, as well as his son, who followed suit as a junior firefighter. In a statement obtained by Mecklenburg County’s news outlet, Bixler spoke of the innate draw to public service, stating, “You have purpose and meaning in life when you’re serving others and making sure your community is safe.” His multifaceted experience includes international duty as a firefighter in Iraq and tenure at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Fire Department.
Although his duties as Fire Marshal will not see him engaging with emergencies firsthand, Bixler's focus on community safety remains unchanged. His responsibilities include oversight of the Fire Marshal’s Office operations, as well as upholding building safety through inspections, planning reviews, and public education initiatives. “I have the same mission of being of service, it’s just in a different capacity where it allows me to get ahead of issues in the community,” Bixler told Mecklenburg County’s news outlet.
Bixler's educational background and professional qualifications underscore his readiness for the new role. He holds a B.S. in Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigation and is currently pursuing a Master's degree to further solidify his expertise. He's a prominent figure in the firefighting community, holding certifications that affirm his capabilities—backed by his active involvement in professional organizations and voluntary service. Despite the shift to a more administrative role, Bixler remains hands-on as a volunteer firefighter, an ironic testament to the dedication that has characterized his storied career in public service.
