Mayor Michelle Wu has made a significant announcement that will mark a historic moment for the Boston Public Schools (BPS). For the first time ever, a State of the Schools address will be held, with Mayor Wu taking the stage to outline her agenda for the city's education system and to celebrate the contributions of Boston's educators. According to a statement on Boston's official website, the event is scheduled to take place at the Josiah Quincy Upper School in Chinatown from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. on the evening of October 28.
In preparation for the event, doors for invited guests will open at 6:00 p.m., while the media can begin setting up at 5:30 p.m. Moreover, those interested in covering the event have been asked to RSVP by the previous day, October 27, at 5:00 p.m. With education under scrutiny from various quarters, this event comes at a pivotal time, where, Mayor Wu aims to firmly establish BPS as the premier choice for local families. "Our mission is to make Boston Public Schools the first choice for families. The country’s oldest public school system should be the best, and our city has the resources and vision to make it happen,” Mayor Wu said in a statement released by the City of Boston.
Superintendent Mary Skipper, has echoed Mayor Wu’s sentiments, emphasizing the dedication across the BPS to providing students with the necessary support to succeed. In a statement released by the City of Boston, Skipper stated, "Across our school communities, we are dedicated to ensuring that every student has the support and resources needed to reach their full potential in learning environments that uplift students and gives them a sense of purpose." The State of the Schools event is anticipated to honor this determination and to reinforce the belief in quality education for every child in Boston.
The significance of the Josiah Quincy Upper School as the venue for this inaugural address cannot be understated. Mayor Michelle Wu, alongside Superintendent Skipper, Treasurer and Receiver General Deb Goldberg, the City's Public Facilities Department, and members of the Chinatown community, had previously celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new school facilities last September. As it stands now, for the 2024-2025 school year, it is a beacon of what BPS can offer, equipped with a media center, fitness center, band rooms, and more, tailored to assist every student in excelling and pursuing their unique educational goals.
