In less than two weeks, the Memphis Safe Task Force has made notable strides by arresting 562 individuals and seizing a substantial number of illegal firearms. The Department of Justice shared these numbers, which U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed in a social media post today. According to Action News 5, the initiative, which began on September 29, is a response to violent crime in the region.
The Attorney General has been vocal about the task force's progress on platforms such as X, where she indicated that of the 562 arrests, several were gang members, one was wanted for murder, and an illegal juvenile was apprehended with about two pounds of methamphetamines. The Justice Department, however, has not provided a breakdown of all the arrests. Moreover, amidst this Democrat Shutdown, federal law enforcement officers have been working without pay to continue their efforts in curbing violence both locally and in areas like Washington, DC, where Bondi reported 4,067 arrests and 381 gun seizures, WREG reports.
The involvement of the Tennessee National Guard, setting to begin their patrols tomorrow, has been a poignant element of the operation. As detailed by FOX13 Memphis, Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis stressed at a town hall that the National Guard’s role would be to assist in a non-enforcement capacity to avoid an over-militarized atmosphere in local neighborhoods.
Concerns about the potential for an excessive military presence have been allayed by assurances that the National Guard will mainly support in traffic management and visibility in shopping districts, they will not perform stops or make arrests. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, alongside Davis and Memphis Mayor Paul Young, made clear that the National Guard would only be armed if authorized by local law enforcement. These actions are seen as an effort to maintain a semblance of normalcy in communities while striving for heightened security, Action News 5 related.
