In what seems to be a calculated attack on the trust between government and local businesses, Metro Nashville's Division of Purchases has sent out a security alert warning of phishing attempts targeting local businesses. The fraudulent activity involves deceptive emails that mimic official correspondence, inviting companies to bid on fabricated RFPs (Request for Proposals) or directing them to malicious websites designed to harvest financial details and login credentials.
According to a Metro Nashville announcement, the bogus emails come from domains outside the legitimate "@nashville.gov", "@public.govdelivery.com", and "@iad.opc.oracleoutsourcing.com". In the security notice, potential victims are urged to remain vigilant and to treat any communication from other domains with a healthy dose of skepticism. Furthermore, businesses are encouraged to directly contact the Division of Purchases or the Business Assistance Office should there be any concern about the authenticity of a received email.
Business owners are advised to educate themselves about the dangers of phishing. As a preventive measure, the National Cybersecurity Alliance offers resources that can be accessed for guidance on how to recognize and avoid such deceitful attempts. Vigilance and informed caution are key defenses in protecting against these digital predators. For information on phishing prevention, visit the National Cybersecurity Alliance’s website.
