Alderwoman Larresa Taylor will host an event focused on veterans’ mental health and suicide prevention on Monday next week from 10 a.m. to noon at Milwaukee City Hall, 200 E. Wells St. According to a City of Milwaukee release, Taylor, a military veteran, aims to raise awareness of the mental health challenges many former service members face after active duty.
According to the 2024 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, 6,407 veterans died by suicide in 2022. Data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows 134 veteran suicides occurred in Wisconsin last year.
The event will feature remarks from Alderwoman Taylor, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary James Bond. Veterans will also have the opportunity to share personal stories about their experiences and challenges after service.
The program will conclude with the 22 push-up challenge, symbolizing awareness of the struggles veterans face with mental health and the need for continued support.
