A fatal shooting occurred on Milwaukee’s northwest side following a minor traffic collision involving an off-duty police officer and 26-year-old Elijah Wilks. The incident took place near North 49th Street and West Mill Road yesterday, according to WISN.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman stated that after both men exited their vehicles, Wilks allegedly assaulted the officer and approached with a firearm. Norman said Wilks struck the officer in the face, leading to an exchange of gunfire that resulted in Wilks’ death at the scene. The officer, a 21-year veteran, was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not specified. Nearby residents and businesses, including a bowling alley and daycare, were affected by the gunfire, with one homeowner reporting that bullets struck his house, according to FOX6Now.
Officials confirmed that video footage of the incident exists and is expected to be released within 15 days, in accordance with policy. A firearm was recovered from the scene, and investigators have not yet determined who fired first. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, led by the West Allis Police Department, is handling the case.
Community advocates, including Vaun Mayes and Marty Calderon, have been present at the scene, working with authorities to gather information, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
