To address Milwaukee’s Transportation Fund deficit, the Mayor’s Office has introduced a program allowing parking tickets to be exchanged for free rides on the city’s streetcar. According to a statement of Alderman Scott Spiker titled Truth in Advertising: Parking Tickets to be Renamed ‘Streetcar Stubs,’ individuals who receive parking tickets can use them as streetcar passes for travel between the Lakefront and Burns Commons.
The initiative also includes an option for ticket holders to donate the value of their fines to provide rides for residents in need. The city’s Transportation Fund currently faces a $32.3 million deficit, and this measure aims to help reduce financial strain through creative means of engagement and potential revenue support.
Officials have not yet determined whether the program will significantly affect Milwaukee’s transit budget, but it represents a new approach to addressing the city’s transportation funding challenges.
