This latest addition to the city's harm reduction efforts was put into service to directly address fentanyl overdoses, which have spiked in recent years. Fire Station 5 was chosen due to its strategic position in communities heavily impacted by substance misuse, serving areas such as Midtown Phillips, East Phillips, Corcoran, and Powderhorn Park. According to an announcement by the Minneapolis Health Department, the machine is a step toward broader community access to life-saving medication.
The innovative program, aiming to eradicate preventable overdose deaths, now boasts over 6,000 NARCAN doses distributed across the city. The third machine's installation aligns with the goal of making essential tools for harm reduction more accessible. "Every life lost to an overdose is preventable — and we're treating it that way. This third NARCAN vending machine is part of our citywide strategy to make life-saving tools more accessible, more visible, and more integrated," Mayor Jacob Frey told the local press in a statement. Harm reduction vending machines are not a novel concept; they have been utilized internationally and across over 35 states in the U.S. as effective outreach tools, as highlighted by a May 2025 systematic review in the Harm Reduction Journal. These machines provide anonymous, 24/7 access to NARCAN kits, making them accessible options especially for those typically hard to reach. "The Station 5 vending machine was installed in response to a community need and now community members who need NARCAN have free, full-time access to this life-saving medication," Heidi Ritchie, Deputy Commissioner of Health, City of Minneapolis, explained.
The NARCAN vending machines in Minneapolis are situated at Fire Station 5, Fire Station 14, and Fire Station 21. These stations were picked not only for their central locations but also for their reputation as trusted community hubs, something Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner acknowledged when he noted, “The Minneapolis Fire Department is proud that we can continue to play a vital role in the fight against the opioid epidemic by hosting the NARCAN machine at Fire Station 5. We are confident that the NARCAN machine at this location will be a much-needed resource for our neighbors and the surrounding community.” These stations now play a dual role, both as first responders in emergencies and as proactive protectors of public health.
Each of the three machines contains over 100 NARCAN kits, restocked weekly, ensuring that those in need can always find help at any hour.
