The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) recently celebrated the unveiling of the freshly upgraded Whittier Park, whipping up excitement among residents with its host of enhanced features. According to a report from the MPRB, the park now boasts an expanded playground designed to cater to the boundless energy of local kids, an enclosed futsal soccer/youth basketball court that promises to be a hive of sporting activity, and a connecting plaza to smoothly link these vibrant play areas.

The improvements, constructed through the warmer months, didn't just stop at play areas. The upgrade includes a sleek basketball shooting area, meticulously planned landscaping featuring a stormwater basin replete with native plants, upgraded lighting, more seating, fresh picnic tables, resilient bike racks, and paths to pretty much ensure visitors can thoroughly enjoy their park experience without literally stumbling into each other.

Further enriching the city's sporting landscape, Whittier Park's court isn't alone; it's part of a trio of newly built futsal soccer courts in the city. While Whittier Park also accommodates basketball players, a second, larger court at Clinton Field Park is gearing up to host an exuberant futsal tournament come next spring. Audubon Park's court, also part of the urban renewal, has just opened with temporary markings, set to be fully painted and striped once spring rolls around.

The construction of these courts didn't come out of thin air. The Whittier neighborhood-based Futsal Society, which began its journey in 2016 at Whittier Recreation Center, rallied passionately behind the project. The society now organizes youth teams and leagues that crisscross Minneapolis, fostering a strong community bond through sport. The MPRB, in a statement obtained by their own news release, expressed their gratitude for the unwavering advocacy from the Futsal Society throughout the entire process of planning, design, and construction.

But the Futsal Society hasn't been alone in tirelessly working towards improving Whittier Park. The initiative received a financial boost from Hennepin County and its Youth Activities Grants Program, which contributed to the construction of the futsal courts at Whittier and Clinton Field parks. The Whittier Alliance, a key community player, was thanked for its support and partnership during these upgrades.
