In an effort to combat the growing concern of needle litter in Minneapolis, the city is stepping up its game. As part of its harm reduction strategy, Minneapolis has introduced a new Public Health Specialist dedicated to syringe abatement and community health initiatives. In a post shared by Jason Chavez, council member of Minneapolis Ward 9, it was announced that alongside the Health Department staff, efforts to clean up syringe litter in Phillips have already been underway.
"This morning, I was able to do a syringe abatement ride along with the Health Department, and we were able to clean up needle litter in Phillips," Chavez stated. He expressed gratitude to the staff and highlighted the expansive role of the new Public Health Specialist. Carrying a heavy weight of expectation, the new staff member is set to work closely with diverse groups, including schools, healthcare providers, and communities, in managing needle litter.
Appointed by the city council, the Public Health Specialist's purview will extend to syringe mitigation, dispensing community training and education, and coordinating efforts with Mobile Medical Unit provider teams, among other responsibilities. "I was proud to help lead the city council in establishing this new staff position in last year’s budget and excited about the work ahead," Chavez said, signaling a strong commitment from the city in addressing public health concerns head-on.
For Minneapolis residents needing assistance with needle litter, the city encourages its citizens to reach out. Anyone who encounters syringe waste is advised to contact 311 and provide a photograph to hasten the process. The initiative reflects the city's proactive stance in maintaining community health and safety, leveraging municipal resources to keep its neighborhoods clean and its residents protected from potential harm.
