The Department of Public Safety has extended an open call to volunteer fire departments operating on shoestring budgets to apply for newly available state grants. This financial aid aims to bolster departments with up to $15,000 for essential firefighting equipment. As stated in the official announcement, departments must operate under an annual budget of $50,000 or less to qualify for this aid, which can be used to purchase gear such as turnout clothing, hand tools, and radios. However, a 5% local cash match is required—meaning if the equipment costs $15,789.47, the department needs to come up with $789.47 to clinch the state-funded sum of $15,000.
Governor Mike Kehoe has commendably acknowledged the tireless efforts of these volunteer firefighters, emphasizing the state's commitment to substantially improving their capabilities. As a gesture of this commitment, nearly $1.5 million in state funds have been earmarked to aid volunteer agencies. This program is specially crafted to quickly better equip these brave men and women who consistently put themselves on the line to ensure the safety of their communities. According to the Department of Public Safety, the outreach could potentially benefit over 300 small, rural fire departments across the state.
The sum slated for disbursement stands at a total of $1,455,000. The grants are designed not just to protect but to also offer a modicum of financial leverage, allowing fire departments to prioritize their unique needs. Departments eligible for this funding are defined under Section 320.200(3) RSMo, which includes operations that provide fire suppression and other critical emergency services.
Applications are open, and the clock is ticking with the grant's performance period running from December 15 to May 15, 2026. Interested departments need to act swiftly, as the opportunity will close once the pool of applications suffices to exhaust the available funds. This grant program presents an opportunity for these volunteer firefighters to not only better protect their neighbors but to also more safely conduct their vital work with proper equipment at their disposal.
