Local and state officials are implementing new speed enforcement laws starting today to tackle the issue of speeding on Montgomery County streets. This push aligns with the Vision Zero Initiative, a project that aims to make roads safer by eliminating serious injuries and deaths from traffic incidents.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich stated during a gathering in Wheaton, per the Montgomery County
Department of Police, "The math is simple; the higher the speeds the higher the injury whether you’re in a car, walking, or riding a bike." He thanked Delegates Stewart and Solomon and Senators Smith and Waldstreicher for their legislative efforts. Together, they have introduced a tiered fine system scheduled to come into force to curb the hazardous behavior of speeders.
According to Montgomery County's press release, the new laws establish a graduated fine schedule. Speed demons clocked by speed cameras at 16 miles per hour or more over the posted limit will now face notably higher fines. This is in contrast to the current system, where drivers pay a standard $40 fine for exceeding the speed limit by 12 to 15 miles per hour.
