As federal workers navigate the uncertain waters of the current government shutdown, Montgomery County's Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is stepping up with crucial advice and scam alerts. The shutdown has thrust an untold number of federal employees into financial turmoil—some furloughed, others forced to work without prompt pay. Given these circumstances, the OCP is offering a life raft of tips to help these employees and their families stay afloat and to avoid becoming prey to predatory practices.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the county's support for its federal workforce. "Montgomery County stands with our federal employees and their families during this challenging time," Elrich said, according to a press release on the OCP website. "We encourage residents to rely on trusted resources, stay alert to scams, and seek help when needed." The OCP, under this mandate, is doubling down efforts to actively safeguard workers and link families with necessary support.
Among the precautions the OCP advises include shunning predatory lenders who often use the guise of helping hands to ensnare desperate workers into high-interest rates and concealed fees that promise to only entangle them further into financial distress. They remind residents to communicate with their service providers, as many companies have programs to assist customers in hardship. Additionally, they're raising a flag about the potential for scams, warning that no matter how tempting an offer appears, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.
The OCP also urges residents to understand their housing protections, directing them to contact local resources, like MC311, to learn more about available services. "Our office stands ready to protect our residents from scams, fraud, and predatory practices, especially during times of uncertainty like a government shutdown," OCP Director Eric Friedman declared in an announcement. He further encouraged residents who believe they have fallen victim to scams to reach out and file a complaint with the OCP.
For those needing guidance or to report unfair practices, the Office of Consumer Protection, located at 100 Maryland Ave., Suite 3600, in Rockville, opens its doors from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. More information can be gleaned by calling 240-777-3636 or by visiting the OCP website. The OCP maintains a presence on various social media platforms, offering residents another avenue to stay connected and informed.
