Over the recent weekend, Mount Washington in New Hampshire became the site of a substantial rescue operation as twenty hikers found themselves trapped by the mountain's severe and snowy conditions. According to CBS News, Andrew Vilaine, the trainmaster of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, discovered the hikers after reaching the summit and found them "pleading for a ride down," having been ill-equipped for the mountain's winter-like environment.

The drama took place on a mountain known for sudden weather changes, where temperatures dropped to 20°F, wind chills hit 2°F, and winds reached 35 mph. The hikers were caught off guard but were rescued by the year-round Cog Railway and taken safely down the mountain. They suffered from exhaustion and mild hypothermia, but luckily, none needed to be hospitalized, according to Vilaine’s report to CBS News.

Separately, just one day later, another hiking incident occurred, involving Owen Strommer, a 20-year-old from Rhode Island, who was hiking on the upper reaches of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail when he found himself in treacherous conditions, with his headlamp and cellphone failing, the NBC Boston reports. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, alerted by his 911 call, launched a rescue mission and found Strommer uninjured, after he managed to make his way to a park pickup truck's headlights. The officials emphasized that Strommer had researched his hike, but the winter conditions on the high peaks were beyond his preparations, and such a situation could have had a far worse outcome.

After the incident, New Hampshire State Parks posted a warning on Facebook urging hikers to be “Wildly Responsible.” They advised checking current conditions and bringing proper winter gear, as per NBC Boston.
