In Jacksonville’s Mandarin Oaks Elementary, the strumming of a guitar and the melody of a voice have become as instrumental to learning as books and blackboards for students with disabilities. Laura Fennell, a board-certified music therapist, traverses classrooms with song and instrument, bringing music therapy to those who engage and learn outside conventional lines.

As reported by the Duval County Public Schools, Fennell's visits are more than just a pleasant interlude; they are a creative approach to reach students with significant cognitive, and some physical disabilities. Jan Kemper, an ESE teacher at Mandarin Oaks, praised the adaptability of the therapy, saying, “We have to really get creative with our kids and really think outside of the box.” The program provided by the Cathedral Arts Project (CAP), caters to the varied needs of these students and is funded by Kids Hope Alliance, a move that includes programs in seven different Team Duval schools.

But it’s not just about the music, it’s about tapping into a space of cognition often difficult to access through traditional methods. “My kids learn through so many different ways...we really need that multi-level approach to reach them,” Kemper told the Duval County Public Schools. The tailored lessons borne from this partnership focus on individual educational plan goals that blend the art of music with the science of learning, a symphony of progress for each student.

The benefits of this fusion are not lost on Kemper, who observed increased engagement among her students, through, Fennell’s efforts. The activities range from vocal exercises to recognizing emotions in music, to the hands-on experience of playing instruments - all crafted to align with educational objectives. Fennell's initiative is part of CAP's broader aim to have a deeper reach within the community, with plans to expand their team of music therapists. “I’ve definitely noticed more engagement the longer that she’s been coming,” Kemper remarked. Her sentiment echoes the value of such programs, with families also expressing joy at seeing their children flourish within this enriching setup, as per the Duval County Public Schools.
