Nashville is buzzing as ESPN's "College GameDay" sets its sights on the city for a highly anticipated SEC showdown. The Oct. 22 program marks a significant return, being the first time since 2008 that the pre-game show has graced Nashville, setting the stage for a top-15 matchup between No. 12 Vanderbilt and No. 14 Missouri. As reported by The Tennessean, this week's game features "GameDay" on site for what's shaping up to be a fierce battle.
In a quirky twist of fan allegiance, ESPN has roped in Nate Bargatze, a Middle Tennessee comedian and avid Commodores supporter, as their celebrity guest picker. Bargatze, whose mother once worked in the Commodores' ticket office and who's second cousin had stints with Belmont and as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt, is no stranger to the college football limelight. As Sports Illustrated highlighted, he made waves with a previous appearance on the show in 2023 and voiced his Vandy pride on "Saturday Night Live" after an upset over Alabama in 2024.
The stakes are sky-high for the Commodores, with the team securing a rare top-10 ranking—their first since 1947—and boasting a potential Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback in Diego Pavia. Pavia's commendable feat of 19 total touchdowns this season has him in the Heisman conversation and has brought significant attention to the Vanderbilt program. Adding to the pressure, Vanderbilt's home turf, FirstBank Stadium, announced a sell-out crowd for the in-conference game indicating an electric atmosphere come game day, as WSMV reported.
With both teams standing at 6-1 on the season, and the Commodores coming off a significant 31-24 victory over LSU, expectations are high for what could be an enthralling encounter. "Vanderbilt does Vanderbilt things in a very Vanderbilt way," Bargatze told The Hustler, stressing the unique path the team usually takes in their pursuit of glory. Missouri, on the other hand, comes fresh from a dramatic 23-17 double overtime win against Auburn, and is looking to spoil Vanderbilt's storybook season.
With Pavia at the helm and Vanderbilt capturing the national sports conversation, all eyes will be on Nashville this Saturday. The game is slated for action-packed sequences with SEC play implications, and it'll be seen just how well these two resilient teams can handle the pressure. College GameDay will air live from the site at 8 a.m., with Bargatze taking the guest picker spot ahead of the kickoff at FirstBank Stadium. As the anticipation builds, it seems the city of Nashville is ready for an unforgettable college football experience.
