The streets of Edina might feel a bit safer, and it's not just because Halloween's tricks and treats have passed. George Rerat has joined the local police department's ranks as the newest cadet, adding a touch of youthful enthusiasm to the community's policing efforts.

Rerat, an Edina High School alum, is broadening his academic horizons at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he eyes a degree in criminal justice. The city's newest cadet isn't just any rookie; his high school days glimmered with pursuits from journalism to robotics,  according to an official release from the city. The multi-talented cadet also flaunted his leadership stripes as a lieutenant in the Edina/Eden Prairie Explorer program.

Rerat's jumpstart in law enforcement comes laced with perks. As part of the cadet program designed to nurture future officers, he receives tailored learning opportunities, inter-departmental mentorship and the promise of climbing the ranks, the department's goal being to mold cadets into bona fide police officers once they serve out their 2-to-4-year assignments, reflective of their individual academic endeavors.

Speaking of schooling, the City has sweetened the pot, not just with experiential learning but with real financial backing. They cover the cadet's tuition costs for a two-year law enforcement degree, or the latter half of a four-year degree in the field, ensuring the path to a badge is accessible and well-paved.

"Welcome Cadet Rerat!" the city's announcement beams with pride for the young cadet. His service to the community now includes various facets from animal control to fingerprinting services. Rerat's presence marks a hopeful stride toward a stronger liaison between police and the people they're sworn to protect.
