Commuters in Tulsa are gearing up for another traffic shift as construction projects continue to reshape the city's highways. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued a new set of advisories for the Tulsa area, according to a release published on Oklahoma Department of Transportation's official website. Changes are in effect as of this past weekend and will stretch into 2025 and beyond for some sections.
Significant closures were put in place on Saturday, Oct. 10, for beam installation, affecting US-75 near I-244, and will reportedly last from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation noted that southbound US-75 at the I-244 split north of I-44 would be closed, and traffic detoured to westbound I-244, then to eastbound I-44, and back onto southbound US-75. The westbound I-44 ramp to southbound US-75 will also shut down, but the off-ramp to Union Ave. will remain open. Motorists should be prepared quickly to follow the detours and account for potential delays in their travel plans.
Adding to the commute woes, several ongoing projects will impact travel routes well into future years, especially at the I-44/US-75 interchange where works are set to continue through summer 2028. During this period, northbound and southbound commuters on US-75 and those traveling on I-44 will face various closures and detours necessitated by bridge construction, rehabilitation projects, and ramp closures, as reported by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Long-term adjustments will be a test of patience for drivers with projects extending over the next few years. The US-75 bridge at 141st St. in Glenpool, for example, will see traffic narrowed and shifted through October 2025. Similarly, US-75 will narrow to one lane between 56th St. N. to 66th St. N. through summer 2026 for bridge rehabilitation, creating one further disruption for travelers trying to navigate through Tulsa's road network, as per the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
For daily disruptions, Oklahoma Department of Transportation alerts drivers that the southbound US-75 off-ramp to 1st St. will close from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additionally, eastbound I-244 will be down to one lane at the US-75 junction through October 2025, and westbound I-244 will see the left lane closed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday for maintenance work. Need-to-know updates for commuters extend across the highway infrastructure with US-412, SH-51/Broken Arrow Expressway, and SH-66, each facing various lane closures and narrowing, which may impede the regular traffic flow.
