A large fire broke out at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo on Thursday night, continuing to burn into Friday. As reported by NBC Los Angeles, local residents described the initial explosion's intensity, with one neighborhood resident disclosing how "a loud bang" was heard preceding the sight of the massive flame. Despite the fearsome blaze, El Segundo Police Department confirmed there have been no injuries at the facility and all refinery personnel have been accounted for.
The incident at the refinery, which occupies about 1.5 square miles and processes up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil daily, had local officials coordinating with the Governor's office to ensure community safety. According to a CBS Los Angeles interview, El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel emphasized the prompt response of both Chevron and local fire crews. Mayor Pimentel highlighted the concern and the necessity for investigative work to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
Reassuring the public on the air quality post-incident was the South Coast Air Quality Management District, which noted no immediate elevation in air pollution levels. As per ABC7 News, an air quality index map indicated the Los Angeles area maintained "good" levels, with a reminder to residents to remain indoors, should they see or smell smoke. The facility, boasting over 1,100 miles of pipeline,s has, per Chevron's website, been operational since 1911, making it an established and critical node in the region's energy supply chain.
While the fire was contained early Friday, LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell informed KCAL-TV that crews had the situation under control, contained to a single section of the refinery. Despite the fiery turmoil, operations at Los Angeles International Airport experienced no adverse effects, with LA Mayor Karen Bass confirming on social media that the airport's function remained uninterrupted. As the emergency response winds down, a shelter-in-place order for nearby Manhattan Beach was also lifted, signaling a return to typical cadence for the community south of El Segundo.
