In a remarkable effort to alleviate financial burdens, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced the success of the state's Medical Debt Relief Program, which has cleared over $6.5 billion in medical debt for more than 2.5 million residents this past year. The program, a collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, local acute care hospitals, and the group Undue Medical Debt, was first rolled out in July 2024 and has since eclipsed its projected impact. "People don’t choose to get sick – they’re just forced to deal with it – and the debt that it often brings," Governor Stein said in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office. "The North Carolina Medical Debt Program is a life-changing initiative that will let patients focus just on getting healthy."
According to a report by the Governor's Office, the program was anticipated to support around 2 million individuals by erasing $4 billion in debt, yet these numbers were modest compared to the actual outcome. Governor Stein expressed that the initiative has not only helped close to a quarter of the state’s population but also provided them an chance to regain financial stability post-medical crises. Further insight comes from The News & Observer, noting North Carolina's history with high levels of medical debt, with figures in 2024 suggesting up to 3 million adults were encumbered by such liabilities.
A local response collected by WSOC underscores the personal impact of the debt relief measures, with Charlotte resident Amanda Xiong remarking, "I think that’s great. I mean, I have family that is like medical debt. It’s going to be a big relief," which reflects the sentiment that this policy could help people rebuild their financial foundations. Similarly, WITN shared the perspective of a Greenville senior who acknowledged the often unseen dilemma of the elderly avoiding medical care for fear of accumulating new debt. Yolanda Sheppard stated, "They’d rather take a loss and just go home to sit and let their back heal or however they’re going to do it," as noted by the Governor's Office.
The relief also resonates deeply with organizations dedicated to fighting chronic illnesses, like the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. "This is a monumental day for North Carolina," said John Broome, the network’s North Carolina Government Relations Director, as per their statement. "The weight of medical debt is incredible. No one battling cancer or any other disease should have to make the impossible choice between lifesaving treatment and food or shelter," as reported by the Governor's Office.
