North Carolina's governor is putting his money where the safety is. Governor Josh Stein declared the state is shelling out over $25 million in grants through the Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP). The GHSP funds aim to minimize the number of traffic-related crashes, injuries, and deaths on North Carolina roads, starting with projects from the beginning of this month, as reported by the Governor's Office.
The effort doesn't just throw cash around, but rather focuses on education, enforcement, and community partnership tactics to enhance road safety. "No matter what form of transportation they choose, every North Carolinian should be able to travel safely each day," Stein told in the announcement, stressing the grants’ role in decreasing traffic fatalities, as per the Governor's Office.
It's not just state agencies getting a piece of the pie. The GHSP's generosity extends to local law enforcement, non-profits, and educational institutions with 119 grants. Funded endeavors include Raleigh Police Department's IMPACT program, targeting DWI prevention, and a campaign underscored by employers statewide to encourage safer driving behaviors, as outlined in the grants announcement.
Looking ahead, the GHSP plans to keep the safety ball rolling. Come January, they're slated to accept applications for even more funding for the fiscal year starting October 2026. "These grants provide law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and government partners with tools to combat unsafe driving behaviors," GHSP Director Mark Ezzell stated in the Governor's Office announcement.
